Former UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland has been suspended from competition for six months following his involvement in a violent altercation at a regional MMA event.
The incident occurred in June at a Tuff-N-Uff card in Nevada, where Strickland was cornering teammate Miles Hunsinger.
After Hunsinger was submitted by Luis Hernandez, Hernandez taunted Strickland with an obscene gesture. The 34-year-old fighter stormed into the cage, sparking a melee that was captured on camera.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) confirmed the disciplinary action on Tuesday, issuing Strickland a six-month suspension and a $5,000 fine.
The commission noted that the suspension could be reduced to four and a half months if Strickland successfully completes an anger management program. His ban is set to expire on December 29, unless shortened.
NSAC chairman Dallas Haun praised Strickland for taking responsibility, saying, “He apologized for his behavior. We appreciate someone stepping up, owning something, and allowing us to reach a resolution quickly with all parties in agreement.”
Fellow UFC fighter Chris Curtis, who also entered the fray, was fined $1,860 but avoided suspension.
The punishment comes amid a turbulent stretch in Strickland’s career.
He last competed in February, losing decisively to Dricus du Plessis in a failed bid to reclaim the middleweight crown.
Strickland captured the belt in September 2023 with a unanimous decision victory over Israel Adesanya but held the title for just one defense before surrendering it to the South African.
