At the 2024 IBJJF No-Gi Worlds, Pat Downey made headlines for an altercation with his opponent, Shamil Murtazaliev, following their final match in the blue belt super-heavyweight division. Downey had dominated the tournament, securing a victory by choking Murtazaliev unconscious.

However, after Downey celebrated his win, Murtazaliev regained consciousness and the two exchanged words, which quickly escalated into a physical brawl.

IBJJF officials intervened, and both athletes were disqualified, leaving them without medals.

In the aftermath, Downey reflected on the incident, taking responsibility for his actions and apologizing for the role he played in the altercation. He also criticized Murtazaliev for what he deemed unsportsmanlike conduct, stating that he was frustrated by the unhumbled behavior displayed after the match.

Downey further vowed not to compete in IBJJF competitions again, although he expressed his regrets over the situation.

Despite the controversy, Downey’s credentials and career remain strong. A U.S. National and Junior College National wrestling champion, Downey has also ventured into MMA and submission grappling. In 2020, he faced multiple-time ADCC champion Gordon Ryan in a hybrid wrestling-BJJ match, dominating the wrestling aspect before succumbing to a submission.

Earlier in 2024, Downey competed in the Craig Jones Invitational, defeating UFC legend Luke Rockhold before falling to Adam Bradley in a close quarterfinal matchup.

Looking forward, Downey is set to face UFC veteran Deron Winn in a no-gi match at the Spokane Submission Series 4 in March 2025. While the incident at the IBJJF No-Gi Worlds may have overshadowed his achievements, Downey’s influence in the grappling world continues to grow. Fans are eager to see what the future holds for the talented competitor.
